All sessions and records are strictly confidential except where state law requires the reporting of threats of violence, harm to self or others, or child abuse and neglect (from evidence or suspicion), when the court's subpoena information or when information is needed for billing purposes.

Is your teen struggling with anxiety or depression? Our experience working with teens and their presenting issues ranges from anxiety, depression, low self esteem, self harm, victims of bullying, physical or sexual abuse, witness to domestic violence (verbal or physical) academics, test taking, sports, adjusting to divorce and/or blended family and transition to college.

Common questions asked by Teen parents:
  1. How do I know my teen is ready for counseling?  Ideally, your teen will tell you when he or she is ready to talk to a therapist. When it comes from the teen, this means they are ready and will participate in sessions and as a result, progress is made quicker.
  2. My teen doesn't want to go to counseling, but my pediatrician, family member or school counselor is recommending it. Should I take my teen to counseling even though he or she does not want to start therapy? In cases where someone else is recommending therapy and teen is hesitant or doesn't think he or she needs it, I encourage parents to talk to their teen first to explain why there is a concern and how counseling may help. Encourage them to at least give it a try (approximately 3 sessions) before declining therapy. Parents, please do not use therapy as a form of punishment or as an ultimatum (it happens). Please do not lie to them and "trick" them into seeing a therapist. This will most definitely sabotage the therapeutic relationship, making it harder to gain progress or none at all. We want for teens to have a good experience in counseling as this will set the foundation of seeking mental health services in the future as needed.
  3. Is a female or male therapist better for my teen? This will depend on your teen and his or her comfort level. Before searching for a therapist, make sure you take time to talk to your teen and ask what they feel comfortable with to start therapy. If for any reason, your chosen therapist is not a good fit, you can always switch to another therapist. Giving your teen the autonomy to choose which therapist to start with, will give them more confidence in the counseling process and start a positive therapeutic relationship from the beginning.
  4. Will I be involved in every counseling session? The first session is the evaluation session. At this session I will need to see at least one parent to obtain family history and presenting issues. After that, it will depend on your teen's goals on how often parents are involved in session. I do encourage parents to be involved as this is an important part in the progress of goals. My goal is to create a safe environment for the client to open up and feel they can trust their therapist and keep their information private. Of course minors, just like adult, also have the right to confidentiality but there are exceptions to this rule and this will be explained in more detail during the evaluation. When client is ready to incorporate parents in session, as appropriate, I will set up a time for a family session or it may be that I see the parent one on one, depending on the situation.
  5. How many sessions will this take for my teen to feel better? There is no set number of session that will indicate completion of goals. This depends on the frequency of sessions and the clients willingness to open up and applying techniques learned in session, outside of session. Participation is a two way street! I have clients that are long term and others that are short term. This will depend on the progression of each client.
  6. Is Video/online sessions secure? Yes, absolutely! We use a HIPAA complaint platform (googlemeets). Before your appointment time I will send you a secure link that is individual to you to start the video session. Most teens loves this option and find it convenient. With more and more things going virtual, this has become a new way to access mental health services.

COUNSELING FOR CHILDREN

Our experience working with children as young as 4 years old. When working with young clients, we incorporate play and art therapy within sessions, if age appropriate. We also strongly believe that integrating parents into therapy, when appropriate, is essential to meeting their goals.

EVALUATIONS FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Jessica Beyer provides substance abuse evaluations that can help determine appropriate level or care.  As a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist,  Mrs. Beyer provides outpatient substance abuse therapy. However, if evaluation determines that you may need a higher level of care, she will provide appropriate referrals for you to start your journey to recovery.
